LOS ANGELES — Search for "Crazy Eyes" online, and you'll find hundreds of folks, mostly on Instagram, popping their eyes out like the prison inmate known as "Crazy Eyes," on Netflix's hit series Orange is the New Black.
Uzo Aduba, who plays the character born as Suzanne, was nominated for an Emmy for her role, one of five actors up for the nod next month. She talked about the #CrazyEyes online phenomenon, and more, when she stopped by USA TODAY offices here recently.
HER PERSONAL HASHTAG
"At first I would only call her Suzanne. Then by season two, I started to find some endearing ways to refer to her as #CrazyEyes and I know that the people who reach out online mean it with no malice so I hashtag it myself."
THE ONLINE CRAZY EYE SELFIES
"It's amazing that it's caught on in this way, that people feel like they want to go online and make crazy eyes. It's humbling really. … I get a lot of babies making crazy eyes, animals, `I couldn't catch the bus — #crazyeyes moment.' It's overwhelming."
FEW SELFIE REQUESTS
"I don't get a lot of people who ask me to do crazy eyes, they want to do it. They want to show me how seasoned or practiced they are in doing their crazy eyes."

ONLINE SHOW = MORE CONNECTED FANS
"I have the Netflix app on my phone. I can be on the subway and watch the show on the go. The world we live in now — it's so small because you can see the whole scope of it from your Google Maps — the way in which we connect has made everyone closer."
WHAT SHE USES
Her devices include: iPhone, iPad, Apple laptop, Apple TV, which she uses to watch Netflix at home and a VHS VCR, which she still enjoys.
"I still enjoy watching movies on VHS that I haven't bothered transferring to DVD."
(Movies of choice: The 2000 film Center Stage and the first Shrek film from 2001.)
APPS
• Spotify (Free download, Apple, Android, Windows.), which she calls "the Netflix of music." The service offers unlimited access to online music, "As much as you want."
• BroadwayWorld.com (Free, Apple, Android.), a guide to what's playing, and interviews with actors from New York theater. "It's a great way to just keep up with that world and all the shows."
• The Orange is the New Black app, which is called Orange is the New App (OINTA) (Free, Apple, Android.): Just launched in June, the photo-sharing app lets you "take your picture and put your face on a character." You can insert your face into characters, or share memorable character quotes, like when Suzanne said, of herself, "I'm a garden rose."
