After a very frustrating winter of stressful days at the office, I realized one thing I was doing wrong was forgetting to eat breakfast and outright skipping lunch in lieu of putting in another hour at my desk. But why? My company doesn't expect me not to take care of myself, my boss would be horrified if she knew I wasn't taking breaks--so why did I allow myself to succumb to the temptation of doing more? In the end, I know it was a product of feeling pressure of holiday time off and a sense of being short-staffed, but truly there's no good excuse to skip meals. How to Act Self-Confident

Reader Resource Join Entrepreneur’s The Goal Standard Challenge and make 2017 yours. Learn more »[1] To help with confidence development, simply try “acting confident” to the outside world, practicing how it feels. The outside “show” helps the inside “take.” It’s okay to display confidence you don’t feel, to take a leap of faith. Pretending is not faking or hiding weaknesses. It’s playing the part you want to achieve.Related: How to Stay Positive at Work[2]When I coach politicians, I tell them to start behaving now as if they had already won the election. If they act the part they are seeking before they get it, it will give them practice in living this success, and it will cause voters to see them in the role, which will make the election more likely to go in their favor.Sometimes people take offense about “acting the part,” as if doing so means that they are fakes. Anyone who has children knows parenting is a fake-it-till-you-make-it experience. Surely confidence deserves the same pass. Comparable fake-it-till-you-make-it action is also what most enterprises are built on. (By the way, a good time to start your acting is first thing in the morning before your brain figures out what you’re doing. Be determined to go through your day feeling undaunted. If at the beginning, the middle or at the end of the day, you appear scared and timid, you will decrease others’ confidence in you at home and in the office.)Related: Transform Dark Days into Opportunity[3]One CEO told me, “I still doubt myself every single day. I’ve had painful situations, times when it was really tough. What people believe is my self-confidence is actually my acting in reaction to fear.” Debra Benton is a globally recognized executive coach, best-selling award-winning business author, and popular conference keynote speaker on…

Most Giftable Books of 2016

One of the best surprises to find nestled under the tree or tucked into a stocking at the holidays is a book. There is truly something for everyone, depending on their interests, and it's hard to go wrong with something useful or entertaining. Books are windows into other worlds, ways to educate ourselves on new things, tools to explore the universe without leaving our bedrooms, and doors to discovering empathy, emotional connections, and growth. When you give someone a book, you give them a story that could change their life, or skills that can make them happier and more confident--and who doesn't want that? That said, the idea of selecting the perfect read can be overwhelming. The best place to begin is selecting a book that's been personally impactful--I tend to give away three or four copies of Rebecca Stead's "When You Reach Me" every holiday because that story means so much to me. But if you haven't read anything life changing lately, we pulled together a list of some of our must-reads and must-gives for this holiday season. Momofoku by David Chang David Chang, master restaurateur and chef, and Peter Meehan, respected food writer, have teamed up to bring Chang's delicious, loving, and modern cooking into your hands. You don't have to be obsessed with Asian cuisine to learn a thing or two from this book, as Chang's flawless technique is demonstrated in broth making, pork handling, and even elevating every day dishes. Chang is best known for revolutionizing American cooking with his collection of incredible restaurants, Momofuku Noodle Bar, Ssäm Bar, Ko, Má Pêche, Fuku, Nishi, and Milk Bar. Not only does this hardcover share his successes, but his learning curves, mishaps, and philosophies about dining. It's not just a cookbook, but a delightful read, giving insight into…

The alt-right came to the fore during the U.S. presidential election.Cadillac officials said on Saturday the brand "did not authorize or approve a casting notice for an 'alt-right (neo-nazi)' role in a commercial. We unequivocally condemn the notice and are seeking immediate answers from our creative agency, production company and any casting companies involved."The Cast Station, a casting service, on Saturday afternoon posted on its Facebook page that a casting notice "for an "alt-right" role in a Cadillac commercial was issued by mistake on Friday, Dec. 9th. The notice was drafted by an employee, who was immediately terminated for her actions. Additionally an outside third party further altered the breakdown without our knowledge and posted it on social media. Cadillac unequivocally did not authorize this notice or anything like it, and we apologize to Cadillac for the ex-employee's actions."The notice also called for "real current or retired military people," as well as "real Olympian runner/cyclist" and "real taxi driver." Another version of the casting call posted on social media described the planned "Cadillac -- Real People" commercial as a "beautifully artistic spot that is capturing (sic) all walks of life in America. Standing together as a union. This is not meant to be offensive in any way. Just a representation of all sides."(Reporting by Joe White;…
