Nissan remakes popular Rogue SUV for 2014
Nissan's unveiled a European concept of its redesigned Rogue SUV today at the Frankfurt auto show today, but here's the real U.S. model, identical to the ones you'll see in showrooms.
Rogues goes on sale in the U.S. in November. Starting prices, including $860 shipping, range from $23,350 for the S front-wheel drive (FWD) to $30,280 for SL all-wheel drive (AWD)
Always a fairly compact, two-row, five-seater, the remade 2014 will offer for the first time an optional, small third row to give the vehicle seven seating positions.
The 2014 is half an inch shorter than the 2013, but the wheelbase is 0.6 of an inch longer, opening slight additional room inside -- but given the Rogue's still compact SUV footprint, we're not sure how useful that little third row will be. And it comes with giant-size head restraints, which give us pause thinking how close that row is to the rear window.
It's Nissan's second-best-selling vehicle, so a strong launch is important for sales and profits.
Hoping to fire advance interest and ensure a fast sales start, Nissan also announced today an "early bird special" for buyers who reserve Rogues in advance of the on-sale date: a $250 gift card or a low-payment lease deal -- $239 monthly after $2,599 upfront. You have to sign by Nov. 12 and take delivery by March 31.
Engine in the U.S. model is a carryover from the current Rogue -- a gasoline 2.5-liter four-cylinder, rated 170 horsepower and 175 pounds-feet of torque. It's mated to Nissan's CVT (continuously variable-ratio automatic transmission).
Highway mileage rating is expected to be a high 33 mpg for FWD models, Nissan says, though U.S. government ratings for the vehicle aren't official yet.
