Chase Mortgage Banking will be laying off about 150 employees in its Englewood location sometime this fall because of a drop in refinances and homeowners’ declining need for help with their mortgages, bank spokeswoman Mary Jane Rogers[6] said Thursday.

“We are responding to our customers’ changing needs,” Rogers said via email. “Fewer homeowners are struggling with their mortgages and many people have already refinanced, taking advantage of the stronger economy and historically low rates.”

Chase officials will work with affected employees to find openings at Chase or other local companies, she said.

The announcement came just a day after San Francisco-based Wells Fargo & Co. (NYSE: WFC), the largest bank in Colorado by deposits, said it was laying off 118 employees in Denver and 768 nationwide.

Chase is a unit of New York-based JPMorgan Chase (NYSE: JPM) and is the fourth-largest bank in Colorado by deposits.
