Cantor Fitzgerald hires Merrill exec, looks for growth in Charlotte
From opposite ends of Tryon Street, Stan Gregor[5] and Scott Hotham[6] saw how much success financial firms can have when growing in Charlotte.
Now on the same team at Cantor Fitzgerald Wealth Partners, they're hoping to rinse and repeat.
Gregor, the former head of Wachovia's[7] private bank in Charlotte, since 2012 has been chief executive of New York-based Cantor Fitzgerald's upstart wealth management affiliate, called Cantor Fitzgerald Wealth Partners. He remains based in Charlotte, with an office in New York.
Hotham, a former Bank of America[8] Merrill Lynch[9] managing director, last month joined Gregor as the firm's new head of U.S. private wealth management sales. He reports to Gregor and will help build the firm's team of financial advisers across the country.
In an interview, Gregor says his goal is to acquire firms and hire top advisers as he builds Cantor's platform across the U.S. The objective is to create a private wealth management company that serves ultra-high-net-worth clients with a level of service and expertise that can match Cantor Fitzgerald's venerable profile in the institutional markets.
He's hopeful Charlotte can become a regional hub and a hot bed of activity for the growing firm.
"We're looking for deals nationally," he says. "But we'd love to do something big here in Charlotte. There's so much potential here."
By hiring Hotham, Gregor adds a seasoned wealth vet to his team. Hotham's 24-year career includes running Merrill Lynch's Charlotte office and eventually being promoted to head of the south Atlantic region, overseeing 1,400 employees in 65 offices.
After Charlotte-based Bank of America acquired Merrill, Hotham was named to a national role as managing director and head of institutional client solutions and strategy at Merrill Lynch. He left the firm last year and took some time off before accepting his new role last month.
